Considering Alternatives to Mailchimp

This past week has been confusing for a lot of Shopify store owners. Most people in the Shopify space were shocked to hear the recent announcement by Mailchimp regarding the status of their partnership with Shopify. The question on everyone’s mind was what email marketing platform they should use now if they choose something totally new. Every entrepreneur knows the importance that email marketing plays to the success of their online business. However, with different options that each have advantages, the choice seemed difficult.
Quora: A great place to find answers to important questions
That’s why I went to my favorite place on the internet for questions, Quora, to see what email marketing tools were getting the most mentions in answers. Sure enough, I found the following question after entering the search term “Shopify”; What is a Mailchimp alternative that integrates with Shopify? Before I reveal the most popular answers to this question, in case you haven’t heard or Quora or have never used it before, it is a popular online question and answer site where anyone can ask questions and get answers from other members of the Quora community. The site has 300 million monthly active users, which puts it above Pinterest and just under Twitter and Reddit in terms of popularity.
You can still use Mailchimp, but not the native integration
First of all, to clarify, Mailchimp has identified “several third-party providers to connect your MailChimp account to Shopify: ShopSync (free), Zapier, and Automate.io. This means that it is not necessary to switch email service providers if you do not wish to do so. However, many Shopify entrepreneurs seem ready to make a switch and are actively searching for a new ESP or another solution since Mailchimp’s native integration will no longer be available after May 12, 2019. To help you consider the alternatives if you are one of the people considering a different option, I looked into what people were saying about some of the other email platforms that can integrate with Shopify. Here are a few that were included in responses to the Quora question regarding this topic and some of the pros of each.
Klaviyo is an option that has been mentioned a lot in the Shopify community, especially since Mailchimp posted their statement. On Quora Zan Vipotnik, CEO of Reach Realm, a company that helps e-commerce businesses increase their revenue with email marketing, went so far as to say that the only real alternative to Mailchimp is Klaviyo. To emphasize his point he added, “don’t even think about using anything else.” One of the benefits of using Klaviyo that is often cited is that it is easy to integrate with Shopify. This may be partially due to the most noticeable benefit of using Klaviyo; the fact that it provides marketing automation and email specifically designed for e-commerce businesses.
When reading about Klaviyo’s benefits on their website, it is easy to see why people like it so much. Some of its many bonuses are its ability to collect and extract complex customer data, excellent segmentation so you can effectively target your emails and get better results, and the ability to track website behavior easily by entering a few lines of code on your site. This allows you to produce analytics reports that can help you make intelligent improvements to your store. Klaviyo’s email software was built with e-commerce entrepreneurs in mind and it shows in its design.
Klaviyo has a free plan for up to 250 contacts and 500 email sends. For $20 per month, you can have up to 500 contacts and you get unlimited emails. It costs $30 for up to 1,000 contacts with unlimited email sends, but you also get email and chat support. Up to 1500 contacts for $45 per month, up to 2000 contacts for $60, up to 2500 for $70, 2600 for $80, 2700 for $100, 5000 for $110, 5200 for $130. The trend continues all the way to 146,000 contacts for $1700 per month and 1,460,000 email sends. As you can see, Klaviyo is affordable for small to medium-sized e-commerce businesses and many people have sworn that they made more money after switching to Klaviyo.
Omnisend was also mentioned on Quora and is a popular alternative to Mailchimp. The most remarkable advantage of Omnisend is that it takes things a step further by not only focusing on email marketing but allowing you to manage all of your marketing channels (like Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, SMS etc.) from one platform. This can provide a great advantage for your business because you don’t have to use a different platform for each of your channels, allowing you to get the message out quickly and easily.
Omnisend features include a drag-and-drop content editor and a report generator among the traditional features you would expect from a reliable marketing software. Omnisend also offers pricing that scales with your business. The standard plan for up to 15000 emails per month is just $16 per month. The pro plan offers more features and unlimited emails for $199 per month. The enterprise plan, which is for teams looking for advanced automation and customization, is priced at $2000 per month. However, the cost of the plans also fluctuates based on the number of subscribers. So, if you have a lot of subscribers expect the pricing to be higher than the base prices I listed.
SendinBlue is another platform, although it doesn’t focus as exclusively on e-commerce, so it is not optimized specifically to serve e-commerce customers. However, the SendinBlue Shopify plugin allows you to synchronize email and/or SMS marketing with your Shopify store. SendinBlue offers an email template library, email/SMS personalization, A/B testing and in the two highest priced plans, send-time optimization and Facebook ads. All of their plans offer unlimited contacts.
On the free plan you can send up to 300 emails per day. The Lite plan costs $25 per month and allows 40000 emails/month. The Essential plan, advertised as ideal for growing a business, costs $39 per month and allows you to send up to 60000 emails/month. The Premium plan costs $66/month with up to 120000 emails/month, and the Enterprise plan is customized, including the price. An advantage of SendinBlue is that even the Premium plan is very affordable.
Drip is another great alternative to MailChimp, and guess what? It can also be integrated with Shopify. Drip offers one-click integration. It also provides vendor segmentation, category segmentation, segmentation by order details, and segmentation by those who viewed a product. Guided workflows and the ability to easily create image-driven visual emails are also great perks. I have personal experience using the Drip email marketing platform so I wanted to make sure to mention it here. Drip’s Basic plan costs $49/month and includes unlimited email sends for up to 2500 people. The Pro plan costs $122/month and with unlimited email sends for up to 5000 people, and the Enterprise plan cost varies and is for 5001+ people.
Although these are certainly not the only alternatives to Mailchimp, the goal was to provide information about four different ESPs all in one place so you can start to compare, and this list seemed like a good place to start. I took other people’s opinions and filled in the blanks. Now it’s up to you to decide what’s best for your business.
